Javokhir Sindarov led the FYERS American Gambits to score consecutive wins on the first day of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League 2026. In the first match, American Gambits defeated PBG Alaskan Knights, where Sindarov defeated Vishy Anand on the Icon board. In the second match of the day, Ganges Grandmasters defeated Triveni Continental Kings. In the 3rd match, Alpine APL Pipers defeated CheQ Mumba Masters. Flawless Start for American Gambits; Heartbreak for Triveni

The day starts with a game between 5-time World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand and the current World Championship Challenger Javokhir Sindarov. Javokhir took the charge and defeated Vishy. FYERS American Gambits won the first game with a score of 4-10 in their favour. In the final match of the day, they defeated Triveni Continental Kings with a dominating 14-5. The 2 times champion Triveni suffered 2 losses on the opening day.

Match 1: PBG Alaskan Knights vs. FYERS American Gambits (4-10)

Viswanathan Anand is leading the PBG Alaskan Knights, and after losing the toss to FYERS American Gambits, the Alaskan Knights had to play with black pieces. On the Icon board, it was a close clash between Javokhir Sindarov and Viswanathan Anand. The game was equal, but Sindarov was pressing and kept Anand under pressure, which led Anand to make a blunder, and the point on the Icon board was secured.

The Game between Nihal and Arjun was a rollercoaster ride. Nihal was clearly winning, and then he blundered a full piece, but eventually the game ended in a draw

The other decisive result was on the board between Maurizzi Marcandria and Abhimanyu Mishra, where Maurizzi secured the win to beat the Alaskan Knights

Match 2: Triveni Continental Kings vs. Ganges Grandmasters (9-10)

It was one of the closest matches of the day. Triveni Continental Kings won the toss, but they decided to play with black pieces. The reason was simple: if you win with black pieces, you get 4 points, and if you win with white, you get 3. The strategy backfired, and the Ganges Grandmasters won 3 games with white and drew 1 game. The highlight of this game was Levon Aronian defeating Wei Yi and the 2 girls, Polina Shuvalova and Stavroula Tsolakidou, who beat Zhu Jiner and Alexandra Kosteniuk, respectively.

Mr. Bharat Singh Chauhan made the ceremonial 1st move on the board of Nepo and Alireza; the game ended in a draw

Nepo drew his first game against Firouzja, while Levon crushed Wei Yi. Together they are in the dugout following the games of their remaining team members.

Match 3: CheQ Mumba Masters vs. Alpine APL Pipers (8-10)

The unique point-scoring system of the GCL ensures that the tides can turn at any second! The climax of this match was so intense that Magnus Carlsen himself was unsure if his team, Alpine APL Pipers, had secured the victory. While Vidit and Humpy registered essential wins, Anish went down in his game. The score was in favour of the Alpine Pipers, but Divya was losing against Harika. Ultimately, that result didn't matter, as the Alpine Pipers won the match 10-8, thanks to Vidit and Humpy winning with the black pieces.

Vidit defeated Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, and Humpy defeated Carissa Yip to score important winning points for their team

The Belief Of the Team

This is what happens when a team believes in you! The Cheq Mumba Masters team got a shock when their 2nd board player, Vladimir Fedoseev, wasn't able to make it to Bengaluru for GCL 2026. Just 1 day before the event, they had to rope in Pranesh! The 20-year-old from Chennai came in and was given the 2nd board. A very interesting choice by the team, because they could have potentially placed Mamedyarov on board 2 and given Pranesh board no.3. But they did not.

Pranesh won against Anish

They believed in Pranesh and his abilities. And guess what? In the first game he played after arriving, Pranesh beat Anish Giri! Although the team of Cheq Mumba Masters lost, this victory of Pranesh augurs well for the team! Pranesh has always believed in himself to beat the best. With the belief of his entire team, his resolve to do well must have gotten a lot stronger!

It was a one-sided match where Nihal Sarin defeated Wei Yi and Daniil Dubov defeated Aravindh Chithambaram to secure important 8 points on the superstar men's boards. On the top board, Sindarov drew against Alireza, and on the prodigy board, Maurizzi Marcandria defeated Pranav V. FYERS American gambit registered their 2nd win and also added crucial game points to their bag.
